Yesterday, the heiress apparent to the Senate seat soon to be vacated by Hillary Clinton visited Syracuse as well as several other “Upstate” New York cities. Caroline Kennedy believes, or in the very least wants us to believe, that she is prepared to be the next Senator from New York. Political positioning aside (I am a registered Republican in a state where it is unpopular to be so), I can not find it in me to support her as a candidate. Kennedy is attempting to represent people she has no idea how to represent.

Kennedy is campaigning, that is what her flurry through upstate towns was, on a track record of being born a Kennedy. Aside from some modest experience serving on different non-profit boards, I don’t see anything else in her history that would say she is ready to represent the people of Upstate New York. I find her attempt to get appointed to this Senate seat even more disgusting than when Hillary decided that New York was the place to further her political career. The reason is because Hillary at least took the time to do research on the needs of this region. She took the time to understand, or at least make it seem like she understood, what the troubles were that are facing Upstate New York. Kennedy, on the other hand, came into town to glad-hand Mayor Matt Driscoll and left just as soon. The support of Driscoll is certainly key. He is seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party here in New York and could tip the scales in Kennedy’s favor.

Upstate New York would be much better served by someone such as Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown or State Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito of 116th District (Rome/Utica). Both candidates have significant experience with the issues that the people of Upstate New York face.
